Gamma Finder® II training for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Bangkok / Thailand
In mid-October Dr. Michael Wolf, director of the Breast Center at Martin Luther Hospital, Berlin visited the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer in Thailand / Bangkok
. The aim of the trip was to train the Clinical Director Dr. Kris Chatamra, his doctors and his nurses in the sentinel lymph node biopsy-method (SLNB) using the Gamma Finder® II which was given to the hospital by WORLD OF MEDICINE.
On the first two days, Dr. Wolf made more than 40 participants familiar with the International Policy S3 (gold standard in the treatment of breast cancer patients in Germany and USA), the SLNB method, its application as well as with the concept for a breast cancer center.
Doctors and nurses from the departments of radiology, pathology, oncology and gynecology participated in the presentations and the following selection of patients. The tissue which was selected to be examined was made visible by Dr. Wolf by using ultrasound imaging. Afterward he encapsulated the tumor area with the radioactive substance 99mTc. For a successful sentinel lymph node biopsy, it is important that all relevant departments obtain knowledge about the method. The active participation of these departments made the interest in SLNB very clear.
On the third day, Dr. Wolf performed SLNB along with doctors from Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer. The Gamma Finder® II was used with two patients with breast cancer. Fortunately, both patients were free of lymphatic metastases. Therefore a complete removal of the axillary lymph tissue was not necessary.
On post-operative day, both patients were examined by Dr. Wolf and his colleagues from the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer. On the fourth day of his trip Dr. Wolf answered a number of important questions from Dr. Kris Chatamra and his team.
All the doctors at the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer are convinced that the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) by using the Gamma Finder® II is an excellent method for gentle treatment of breast cancer. With the donation of the Gamma Finder® II to the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer WORLD OF MEDICINE would like to support the outstanding efforts of Dr. Kris Chatamra in the treatment of patients in Thailand - regardless of their income.
