New Hip for Berlin's Fountain Fairy

Isolde Josipovici, who has been seeking sponsors for Berlin's fountains for years, fell hard

As Berlin's Fountain Fairy she makes the fountains gushing. Isolde Josipovici has been collecting money for 16 years, that during summer time the fountains of the city can be filled. Now Josipoviciis temporarily out of service herself – due to an accident.

The Charlottenburger fell hard. "I was on my way back from the flower shop and on the stairs to my appartment when everything turned black in front of me," she says. "A blackout, I hit upon the marble floor. I felt pain as if somebody cuts of my leg. On all fours, I crawled up the steps." She was taken to Martin Luther Hospital – femoral neck fracture and pelvic fracture! Prof. Wolf Petersen, head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, performed the emergency surgery. "The head of the femur was bended away, the blood supply was no longer guaranteed, it was threatened to die off," he says. "I put in an artificial hip joint." Isolde Josipovici was back in the hospital bed for minutes, when she was back on the phone negotiating with potential sponsors. Several million Euros she has campaigned for Berlin's 550 fountains so far. With the collection bag she got 60.000 Euros. "I've just found a company as donor for the fountain on Ernst-Reuter-Platz," she says cheerfully. "For my baby!"
